Choosing to adopt or buy an animal is a major decision that will impact your pet and you for the duration of their lives. Before making a decision, it's important to consider your options and weigh the pros and cons.

The majority of pets available for adoption at shelters and rescue organizations have already been spayed or neutered, and vaccinated. They could also be microchipped. This can save you a lot of money!

Personality

Personality is a complicated and dynamic set of attributes that influence your thoughts, feelings and behave. It is an integral part of who you are and affects relationships, success and overall satisfaction. Many people are unhappy and overwhelmed by their personality, and they try to improve it. It is important to remember that you have no control over changes in your personality. Instead, focus on gaining self-knowledge and learn to accept yourself as a person with strengths and weaknesses.

Psychologist Gordon Allport was the first to give personality some scientific recognition by identifying what he termed "central and cardinal characteristics." These are the traits that define an individual's unique character. He classified Webster's Dictionary as a "personality" which contained 18,000 words. Later studies reduced these characteristics to the Big Five personality dimensions used by psychologists.

The concept of moderation is an additional method of understanding personality. Moderation is the gradual alteration that occurs when hypothesized mediators and predictors are measured simultaneously. This type of test works well for assessing trait processes but doesn't take into consideration the effects of a particular situation.

For instance, if you are open and sociability, your ability to be cooperative and trustworthy will enhance the effectiveness of a team. These traits can help you be more understanding of other people's requirements and wants.

In addition to these traits there are some who are born with certain temperaments. These are the underlying automatic responses to danger and reward that are a reflection of associative learning. Modern temperament theories include four types: harm avoidance (avoidance of harm) as well as reward dependence (dependence on rewards) and novelty-seeking (seeking novelty), and persistence. These temperaments are similar to the traditional notions of choleric and Phlegmatic personality types. However, they are characterized more by dimensions than distance categories. These types of personalities are more likely to be happy and successful than those who do not but it's not an absolute guarantee.
