Lolita’s Personality

These birds can be very loud, despite their affection for them. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They are capable of ear-shattering calls and screech-calls, which can be a nuisance in condos and apartments or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.

Another interesting characteristic of this particular species is that it is monomorphic, meaning males and females are hard to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once sex is known pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For decades activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, conservationists hoped that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as to be a family member, on a plan to eventually move her to the open water. The plan included a facility in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. As her captor does not have to disclose the information, it's unclear what health issue the orca is suffering from. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an integral factor in the death of orcas in captivity.

The decision comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal issue.
