Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug

Are you a home cook who loves the responsive heating control of gas cooktops but wants an electric oven for baking? Discover a dual-fuel range cooktop that gives you the best of both worlds.

Many experienced home chefs prefer gas cooktops for their superior temperature control and the ability to employ advanced cooking techniques such as charcoaling. These stoves are expensive, particularly when you need an additional gas hook-up and electrician for installation.

What is a 13amp plug?

If you own dual fuel range cooker (also known as a gas and electric oven), then you'll need a suitably rated 13 amp plug. The plug must also be hard-wired by a certified electrician to the cooker ring.

This ensures that the current flowing through the plug is safe and not excessive, which could result in an electrical fire risk. The plug is equipped with an electrical fuse that regulates the current. The fuse blows whenever the current is beyond its capacity. This protects the appliance from overload of electricity.

The fuse is rated at 13 amps, which is shown on top of the plug. This is the maximum amount of current the plug could pass without damaging the appliance or causing heat to the socket. It is crucial that when replacing fuses, you always use the same amps as the original. If you replace the fuse with one that has a different rating, then you are at risk of overheating the socket and putting you and others at danger.

A 13 amp fuse is likely to be a ceramic one that is extremely durable and is able to withstand high temperatures produced by a range cooker. Ceramic elements are also fire-resistant, and thus a better choice than other types.

There are many ways in which 13 amp plugs can be fitted. It can be connected to an existing live socket and the flex then connected to it by either a screw or a jaw-type cord clamp. The clamp on the cord should be tightened after the plug is firmly pushed into place.

Before connecting the wires, you may have to remove the cardboard wiring diagram which is placed over the pins of some plugs. The wires need to be cut to the correct length, because if they are too long, they can get crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire should be the longest in order to connect it prior to the neutral and line pins.

How do I connect an outlet with 13amps?

The majority of dual fuel range cookers in UK are equipped with a 13 amp plug. This is crucial since ovens draw large amounts of current, while the standard plug sockets have a 10-amp rating.

In general new appliances should be fitted with a plug at the point of sale. This is to ensure compliance with the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety Regulations) 1994. Older appliances might not have a plug connected and this is the reason for the problem.

When connecting the cooker to an existing plug socket the first thing to do is to check that the rating of the fuse in the fuse box matches the plug's rating. This is important because a faulty fuse could be dangerous.

It is also recommended to check that the fuse has been fully seated into the cartridge, and there is no excessive movement. The next step is to prepare the flex to be used. Remove the sheathing from the flex in order to expose the three conductors that are insulated within. Use a utility blade to nick the sheathing just beyond the grip on the cord at the entry point of the plug. This will not be able to penetrate the insulated conductors. The nick should be large enough that the sheathing can split and then expand as it is pulled back, revealing the cable underneath. Finally, cut off the excess sheathing leaving approximately 40mm of length that extends beyond the flexing end.

This flex should be placed over the plug with the earth terminal on the top and the live and neutral terminals on the bottom. The sheathing on each pin is removed using the conductors in the colour of the wire as a guide. The internal cable is then inserted to the terminal by with the help of the cord grip. If the plug is equipped with an attached cord clamp that is screw-type, let it loosen and then pull the insulation back to reveal the copper wires. Connect each insulated wire to the appropriate terminal by using the channel in the plug. Begin with the earth conductor first, then the neutral and finally the live.

What is the maximum draw of a plug with 13amps?

The maximum current draw of the 13amp plug is 3kw at 230volts. This is quite a bit of power, however the standard fuse that is fitted in a UK plug will not fail until the cable has reached to a dangerous level. It is essential to be aware of the amount of power you are using in your kitchen as a faulty plug or socket could cause a fire.

The ceramic fuses used in plugtops weigh around 25mm and are rated for mains voltage of 240V. The fuses will bear the BS Kitemark or a similar mark on the side and they'll contain sand. There are glass or plastic alternatives, however they shouldn't be used with a live plug unless you want to blow up the fuse and possibly be electrocuted!

In the UK, most dual fuel range cookers are hardwired. They cannot be plugged directly into the wall outlet. They are typically connected to a dedicated cooker ring circuit which is only suitable for appliances that draw up to 20 amps.

You can check the ring circuit at your home by looking at the fuse box or asking an electrician nearby. You can ask them if the sockets are on the same ring, or if they are distinct. They should also be able tell you if there is an individual circuit that powers your oven.

You will not find dual fuel range cookers that can be installed in a standard socket, since this could pose a significant fire risk and would violate electrical regulations. A professional electrician will always install any new electrics to the kitchen cooker, and they will ensure that the total load (both the hob and oven) will not exceed the supply capability of that circuit.

The benefits of a dual fuel cooker include the responsive heating of a gas cooktop and the precise operation of an electric oven. This is why they're well-liked by cooks and chefs alike.
