If you complete your CBT at 16 you can upgrade to a limit 50cc bike by 17. At 19 you can upgrade onto an A1 licence that allows you to ride a 125cc bike without L plates and carry passengers.

The A2 is a step up from this and you can get this either by taking a direct access the theory and practical test or by upgrading from an A1 after two years.

A1 Licence

The open road, the wind in your hair, the exhilaration of riding a motorbike. There's nothing like it, but before you can experience the freedom that comes with it, there is a crucial first step to make getting your A1 licence.

The A1 license is the first rung on the bike licensing ladder. It permits you to ride mopeds and motorcycles that are 125cc or larger with an up to 11kW. It's available from 17 years old and is a great choice for those looking to start their motorbike journey in a more accessible manner.

To gain an A1 licence you will be required to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT), and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential to motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and practical test. The official website of the Government allows you to schedule your test in theory and alter or cancel your appointment.

For your A1 practical test, you will need to be accompanied by an experienced motorcycle instructor. The test should last about 20 minutes and will comprise two modules. Module 1 is conducted in the training center and will focus on off road maneuvers, such as controlled stop, a slalom and the figure eight. The remainder of the test is performed on the road and will test your ability to manage a motorbike while at speed.

Module 2 will concentrate on riding a motorbike in traffic and navigating intersections. You will also be tested in your ability to follow road signs, and comprehend and follow road laws. You will also be required to show your ability to ride at a slow speed and do slow control exercises such as turning left, riding up and down hills and turning U-turns.

Once you have passed your A1 licence, you'll be able to upgrade to the A2 license by passing your CBT Theory, CBT and Practical Tests. You will be able to ride any A2 category motorcycle and carry a passenger.

A2 Licence

The A2 Licence is the second step in the process of getting a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is restricted and can only be obtained by those who are 19 or over and possessing a valid CBT. The A2 licence allows you to ride on motorbikes that have a maximum horsepower of 47 BHP. However, motorcycles that exceed this power can only be restricted to 94 BHP.

If you decide to take the A2 route, you'll need to be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests are taken on a bike that is eligible for A2 entitlement. Both modules can be booked in the same location as your CBT course and the theory test. The A2 route is best for riders who have completed their CBT course relatively quickly and are prepared financially and physically to ride the possibility of a larger motorcycle.

Module 1 of your A2 motorcycle test is a car park course where you will be taught how to control your bike, including slow speed manoeuvring and emergency stops. You will then go through the road portion of the test, in which you'll need to demonstrate hazard-avoidance exercises and road positioning. You are also required to conduct lifesaver checks and maintain two seconds of distance from the vehicle ahead of you. There are minor mistakes that you can make up to a total of 10 faults. This could include not using your mirrors or failing to maintain a safe distance.

Once you pass both modules of your A2 motorcycle test, you'll be able to ride any motorcycle that falls within the A2 category. This includes the renowned Honda CB500F and Yamaha MT-07 models. These bikes are not particularly powerful however they are able to manage the speed limits and provide a comfortable and enjoyable ride.

A3 Licence

The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes with more power. It also provides additional benefits that you don't get from the CBT for example, riding on motorways and carrying passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 license by completing additional training, and passing the relevant practical tests. The A2 license is valid for a period of two years. After that, it can be upgraded to an unlimited A license.

The first step in obtaining your A2 license is to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test and Motorcycle Theory Test. Once you've completed these requirements, you will be able to take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 test is about proving your ability to ride safely in a closed-circuit, while the module 2 test involves manoeuvres on an open road.

During the A2 practical test, you must be able to demonstrate good ability to observe and anticipate hazards on the road. You must also be able to use the correct road positioning and perform controlled maneuvers. You must be able for instance, to perform a U turn and a figure eight. You should be able to manage the bike in slow-speed situations such as turning at junctions or responding to traffic signals.

After having passed your A2 test you can begin working towards obtaining the full A license. This can be done through the progressive access route or by taking a direct entry exam. You must pass both the mod 1 and 2 practical tests as well as the theory test to be eligible for direct entry.


The A1 and A2 licences differ from the other UK motorbike licenses, as they are governed by power-to-weight ratios instead of engine cc. This means that even 600cc bikes may still be A2 compliant, especially when they have restrictor kits. It's important to know that not all bikes claiming to be A2 conforming are actually A2 compliant. Do your research prior to buying one.

A4 Licence

The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This licence is valid for buses, trucks, and coaches. It also covers vehicles carrying dangerous products. Drivers must pass a criminal background test to qualify for the license. The Digital Driving Licence displays important information, such as the date of issuance and classes of vehicles in which the motorist is certified to drive.

To obtain an A1-A4 licence the driver must go through training at a local transport office or an approved driving school. They must also take a physical exam. The course lasts about 5 hours (1 full day) and includes a lecture on driving etiquettes and defensive driving as well as the laws related to driving.

The driver will be issued a 'notice of application' that must be displayed in their premises once the application has been approved. The cost will be based on the value of the property. After paying the fee, drivers will be issued a 'licence summaries' via post. They should also keep the other pages of their licence in a secure place, as they may be required to show them by police or council officials.
