How to Repair a Remote Key

Although many remote key fobs come with impressive battery lifespan, they eventually degrade. Sometimes it's as simple as replacing the batteries in the device, however sometimes the problem can be more severe.

Remove the remote from the unit and clean the buttons. Then move them in and out. These techniques might be all you need to get your key fob to work.

Battery

If the fob continues to working, you can swap out the CR2025 or CR2032 battery. If it's not accessible, you can take it off the fob and check the batteries' terminals and buttons for any indication of looseness or damaged parts. You can usually solder the buttons and terminals back in place. However, you'll need to know what type of battery is installed in the fob.

If you're not sure if the battery is at fault you can use a backup fob to start or unlock your vehicle. If it's possible, it's time for a replacement of the primary fob. If not, a professional inspection is needed to figure out why it's not functioning properly. It could be a simple reconfiguration, or it may require other types of repairs. You may also find that your vehicle has forgotten the fob. This is not something you can tackle by yourself.

Case Study

The plastic housing that covers the outside of a remote is referred to as the case. It typically comes with an alternative button pad. It is best to use a brand new case, because the one you have case is likely to be quite grungy. It is essential that the circuit board within the case is correctly placed. The circuit board is what is responsible for controlling the function of the key fob. You can test it using an instrument set to RF (radiofrequency) mode and a scanner that is tuned to the same frequency as the key fob.

Check the contact points on the keys on the keypad. They could be loose over time or broken. Carefully soldering them back in place can often return them to their original function unless they completely snap off.

Buttons

If your key fob buttons are no longer working or are difficult to push, you can purchase an alternative dorman or Motormite remote key housing on the internet at a an affordable cost for your model/year/make. Then, simply pop the circuit board out of your old case into the new one. In some cases it may be necessary to adjust the position of the board slightly. The black contact points of buttons can be adhered to using aluminum foil and double-sided tape.

Programming

TheKeyLab is linked with the receiver of your vehicle. This connection can become corrupted. A professional will inspect the vehicle to determine the make model, year and model. They will use specialist equipment to re-pair or program a blank fob or transponder chip (or make a key replica if this is possible). Then, they test the remote to make sure it functions.

When reprogramming blank keys it is crucial to be careful. The process can be complicated and each manufacturer offers distinct instructions. It is also easy to miss a step, or wait too long before exiting the programming mode, therefore it is best to use professionals with extensive knowledge of the security system of your vehicle to avoid damaging the car.
