Prime Minister Svu Ndebele officially opened the lavish R727 million North Coast Stadium last night with the first dice thrown on the main floor of the glamorous Shivaya Casino and Entertainment Kingdom.

Ndebele congratulated Afrisun on seven years of gambling with many dignitaries, including MEC for Arts, Culture and Tourism Naren Singh.

The company, made up of majority shareholders Sun International, Moreland, Dolcoast and a number of Black empowerment partners, received the state's last casino license in August 2000.

The palatial AfroFantasy venue, just north of Umranga, is expected to pump billions of dollars into the local economy, as well as already creating jobs. According to Tristan Katche, Sun International's division director, Shibaya has already created 1,300 permanent jobs, as well as around 5,000 temporary and 1,000 indirect jobs, during construction.

During the development, Afrisun built an interchange on the N2 highway, giving it safe and efficient access to facilities that could park in 2,200 vehicles. The off-ramp is also expected to affect future development of the entire northern corridor, which begins to become known as the shibiya node.

"The interchange symbolically unblocks the area for development. It highlights the reality of the construction of King Shaka International Airport in La Mercy and hints at further growth in the area," Katsuzet explained.

Moreland, one of the minority shareholders, is already planning new developments on both sides of the N2 near Shibaya.

Regarding the original casino bid, a temporary casino was created in Mount Ejikombe. Opened in February 2001, the highly successful Sugar Mill Casino moved locks, stock and barrels to Shivaya with 650 employees, allowing the company to seamlessly transition into what has been touted as one of the most technologically advanced gaming businesses in the country.

Last night's preview of the gaming facility showed the innovative use of sophisticated smart card technology when it comes to Shibaya's 900 slots and 37 gaming tables, which include roulette, blackjack and poker and span three areas: the main floor, dedicated smoking floor, and elegant, luxurious royal court.

Kaatze said Sun International is dominating local gambling with a 42% local market share, driven by extensive industry research and development, which results in the continued development of new and innovative gambling products.
