If you're a Nespresso fan, you'll want to choose a coffee pod machine that's compatible with Nespresso's capsules. It's also possible to consider a model that can use other capsules, such as organic and Fairtrade choices or special flavoured pods. They are usually available for an equivalent price to the original ones and some come with an inbuilt milk frother, to make the perfect cappuccino or latte.

It delivers on three counts. This compact pod coffee maker is affordable and produces an extremely rich, robust espresso every time. It's among the quietest machines available on the market. You can make a cup of Joe even before the alarm goes off.

The Bruvi comes with two sizes of cups that can be adjusted to suit the type of drink you're making. If you're making a latte or cappuccino it comes with three different textures and temperature settings for milk so you can get your froth on. It can even brew hot chocolate, which is great for kids or adults who need to warm up and wind down.

Another feature that's a big plus is the programmable sleep mode that switches to standby after a period of one hour of inactivity. It's also simple to clean and requires very little water. Think about a machine with a removable capsule holder to make emptying the capsule easier.

There are additional accessories that you could add to your coffee pod such as a milk frother (unless it's part of the model you buy). You may also want to think about a reusable coffee filter that can be used with capsules that are reusable. A thermometer or water kettle to control temperature precisely is another option.

However, many pod-based machines aren't known for producing an intense, rich cup that holds up to the most discerning palate. During our testing, we discovered that some pod coffee makers to make watery or bitter cups of coffee. For those who don't want the hassle of grinding beans or boiling kettles the pod coffee machine is a great time saver. These idiot-proof appliances allow you to brew the perfect cup of espresso, coffee or tea in a matter of minutes with no cleaning up. And while these machines do generate more waste for the environment than drip machines but they're a lot less time-consuming than brewing a batch of whole beans in a French press or pour-over.

In the latter half of 2022, a startup based in Los Angeles known as Bruvi launched its BV-01 coffee pod machine. It promised to produce superior single serve coffee that tastes better, offer more drinks options than the vast number of other pod-based machines, and also provide capsules that can be reused and removed without breaking down into tiny microplastics. And while the Bruvi brewer is more expensive than Keurig and Nespresso models, it's an excellent all-around device that feels like the dawn of a new era in pod coffee.

When purchasing a coffee pod maker, the size of the serving is a major aspect to take into consideration. Some models can produce single-serve cups in a variety of sizes, ranging from large travel mugs to 2 ounce espresso shots. Some machines can brew whole pots of coffee, and some even include a milk froth to allow you to add a creamy cappuccino or latte into your morning cup of joe.

The design of a coffee pod machine is a further factor to take into consideration. The color and the finish of the machine, as well as the placement and size of the reservoir and pod compartment will impact the way your machine appears on your counter. Some brands offer different colored pods so that you can change your drink according to the mood or season.

The drip tray can be adjusted to ensure it will fit tall travel mugs or short espresso cups. It can make up to five different drinks due to a barcode system which scans each compatible pod to automatically adjust its settings.

This is the best-looking machine we've ever test. It also produces an excellent tasting brew, especially for an automatic. We didn't give it the top spot due to the fact that it has limited milk-frothing abilities. Its only option is to use dried skimmed milk capsules, which don't taste as good as freshly squeezed milk. If it had a built-in milk frother then we'd be inclined to give this machine the top spot.
