[National Sports Festival] “Hyung! Wait!”… Lee Jae-seong, a promising sprinter in track and field, challenges Kim Kuk-young

In the 100m college division, 'ace for 10 years in short distances' has a better record than Kim Guk-young in the general division.

Starting next year, he and Kim Guk-young will be in the same pot at Gwangju City Hall... “Everyone must learn”

Lee Jae-seong (22, Korea National Sport University), a promising sprinter in men's track and field, challenged veteran sprinter Kim Gook-young (32, Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall), who represents Korea.

Lee Jae-seong crossed the finish line with the fastest time of 20.70 seconds among participating athletes in the 200m finals of the men's college division at the 104th Jeonnam National Sports Festival held at Mokpo Sports Complex in Jeollanam-do on the 16th.

He had won the men's college 100m race the previous day with a time of 10.32 seconds, so he achieved his second gold medal today.

Both the 100m and 200m records are university competition records.

Jaeseong Lee, after the awards ceremony, said, "Following the 100m yesterday, we continued the good trend and achieved a good record in the 200m today," but added, "It is very unfortunate that we were unable to break the Korean record in the college division."

The Korean record for the 200m university division is 20.68 seconds set by Seunghwan Ko (Gwangju Metropolitan City Hall) at the 2019 Naples Summer Universiade.

The new university record was missed by only 0.02 seconds.

What is more noteworthy is that Lee Jae-seong recorded better records than his seniors in the general division.

In the men's 100m division at this year's National Sports Festival, Kim Kook-young won with a time of 10.35 seconds, 0.03 seconds slower than Lee Jae-seong, and in the 200m, Ko Seung-hwan won with a time of 20.76 seconds, 0.06 seconds slower than him.

Even if Lee Jae-seong had competed in the general division, he would have beaten them and won two gold medals.

It is said that the experience of winning a bronze medal at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, which closed this month, was a great help in achieving good results at the National Sports Festival.

In Hangzhou, Lee Jae-seong teamed up with Lee Jeong-tae (Anyang City Hall), Kim Guk-young, and Ko Seung-hwan to win a bronze medal in the men's 400m relay.

It was the first time in 37 years that Korean track and field had won an Asian Games medal in this event since the 1986 Seoul Games (bronze medal).

Lee Jae-seong said, "I stepped on the big stage and immediately played in the National Sports Festival, but honestly, I didn't feel as nervous as I did in Hangzhou.

I was able to play more comfortably and comfortably."

He then pointed to his left chest, where his heart is, and said, "I still vividly remember the feeling I had when I crossed the finish line in Hangzhou and waved the national flag.

I wanted to feel this feeling again and again, so I prepared harder and achieved such a good result. “I got it,” he said with a smile.

Jae-seong Lee has now graduated from college and joins a business team.

It has already been confirmed that he will join the Gwangju City Hall track and field team, a ‘famous sprinter.’

At Gwangju City Hall, Kim Gook-young, who has dominated Korean sprint racing for over 10 years, is holding on.

Lee Jae-seong set his goal to surpass Kim Kuk-young.

He said, “I always run with the mindset of beating Gook Young-i, but that hasn’t happened yet,” and added, “I will try hard to challenge Gook Young-i.”

Before that, Lee Jae-seong tries to 'absorb' everything about Kim Gook-young by his side.

Lee Jae-seong said, “I want to learn everything from body management, mental strength, and techniques that have kept Korea’s No. 1 title for over 10 years.”

His challenge at the National Sports Festival is not over yet.

He will challenge for three gold medals in the men's college 400m relay held on the 17th.

Jae-seong Lee expressed confidence, saying, “As long as we don’t make mistakes with the baton, there will be good results because our team is superior.”
