Reflexology is an alternative medicine that involves the application of pressure to specific areas of the feet and hands. It is typically done without the application of oil or lotion, employing only thumb, finger and palm massage techniques. These techniques are employed in combination with other techniques such as aromatherapy, acupressure, acupuncture as well as meditation, reflexology, stretching, and other manual therapies. The hands are home to more than ninety percent of the human nervous system, according to certain studies. In addition, it has been said that the hands can channel energy into the body by making use of certain nerves referred to as "nerve channels".

Reflexology employs both hands and feet in a similar way. The traditional Chinese foot reflexology massage is well-known to the majority of people. However, in the west, this kind of massage is now referred to as foot reflexology massage. Reflexology massages are done with the patient lying on their stomachs, with their knees bent, and their feet on prayer chairs.

The aborigines of Australia have been practicing reflexology for many centuries, just like other indigenous peoples. A short course in reflexology was first available to the public in the 18th century. In the short duration of the treatment, pressure is put on specific areas of the feet, although this was not always done by hand. The theory behind reflexology is that the feet contain reflexive nerve channels which allow the body to recover itself.

Reflexology is a highly effective and safe treatment option for insomnia, chronic pain and anxiety, stress, migraines, and other similar ailments. In addition to placing gentle pressure on certain areas of the feet or hands, Reflexology also encompasses various kinds of stretching, massage, acupressure, herbal remedies and the use of pressure points. Every form of Reflexology should only be performed by a trained therapist. As with any modality of medicine, there could be serious complications when the practitioner isn't vigilant. For example, a wrong pressure point can cause swelling or an injury. It is important to ensure that the Reflexologist is experienced prior to going through Reflexology.

After the reflexologist has gotten the patient's temperature, they'll then identify specific trigger points. These trigger points could be anything from a minor discomfort in the toes to large muscular groups. When the trigger point is recognized the reflexologist will apply pressure until the trigger point disappears. Most practitioners believe that Reflexology is best practiced in a calm and peaceful space, however there are some individuals that believe a professional massage is more appropriate during the Reflexology session.

To be eligible for enrollment into a Reflexology course, a person must undergo a background check and reference screening. Individuals will also need to complete a written consent form as well as satisfy other requirements of the institute they want to pursue. These requirements will vary from one institute to the next. However, a passing score on a proficiency examination and a successful completion of a course in reflexology is required to obtain certification.

The Malaysian government's Ministry of Health regulates all forms of therapeutic and alternative treatments for health including Reflexology. There are more than 40 Reflexology institutes spread across the country, as well as numerous self-practicing groups. Some of these groups have been in existence for a long time, while others have only recently begun to gain in popularity. Although there is no specific regulation for Reflexology however, the Malay regulatory body has stated that it is safe and promotes overall well-being.

Reflexology is gaining popularity all over the world. It can help to relax the mind and improve circulation while simultaneously reducing stress and tension within the body. Reflexologists can use specific areas of the feet, hands and legs to locate pressure points that are related to different systems within the body. By decreasing stress and focusing on inner balance, people can improve their overall health. From relieving tension in the muscles to improving flexibility and mobility of joints, Reflexology can offer people numerous benefits.
