The word derives from the Latin massa meaning mass, touch or rub. It is often used today as a general term to describe a range of bodywork and treatments that involve touch. However, its history has told that the roots of massage goes back to Ancient Greece. Its many branches are still taught to students today in China, Japan, Tibet, India and Italy. Yet, a lot of people from the West have never even tried the practice and prefer to remain with their routines of diet, exercise and medicine.

The most known information about the origins of massage, is it that it started as a method of healing that was popular in classical times in Egypt, Greece and Italy. The popularity of massage therapy decreased in its peak in the Middle Ages when medical technology developed in the same way to create massage therapies. Hippocrates believed that illness was result of an imbalance in the "life-force" of the body. He devised massage therapy to relieve these signs and promote the body to heal.

There are many types of massages that are utilized in the present. There are a variety of massage techniques that may be utilized today, such as Swedish massaging, Shiatsu Acupressure, and reflexology. Each has its own purpose and is used to perform a specific task.

Swedish massage is a gentle stroke of the body with the fingers of the massage therapist. The movements are gentle and the massage involves lots of touch to the body by fingers and palms. The massage is very soothing and helps to relax the patient as well as eliminate any stress and knots that may be in his or her connective tissue and muscles.

Shiatsu Massage is another form of massage which was created in Asia and focuses on acupressure points. This technique also incorporates movements manipulating and applying pressure to various pressure points. Shiatsu massage is not like Swedish massage. It involves more than just the fingers and palms. Shiatsu also touches the elbows, knees, and the feet. Shiatsu massage has been practiced in Asia for many years, including Japan, China and Korea.

The most well-known types of massage that is currently practiced are Ayurvedic massage. Ayurvedic massage comes from India Its roots date back to the beginning of time. Ayurvedic massage, which is an ancient method of healing, was inspired by traditional Hindu principles. Ayurvedic massage is used in a variety of holistic health and wellness centers all over the globe as a result of that.
