Different means not the same. Look at the next two pictures. How are they the same? How are they different?
We can compare things by looking at the ways things are similar or the same.
We can contrast things by looking at the ways things are different.

Look at the pictures of the lemon and banana. Let’s compare them, or see how are they alike. They are both fruits. They are both yellow. They are both foods. Now let’s contrast them, or see how are they different. They are different shapes. They taste different. Watch
Comparing and Contrasting (7 mins)
In order to compare and contrast, you have to use your detective skills and look very closely at things. Once we notice the ways things are the same and different, we can sort them into groups.
Sort the Same Group Two Ways
We can sort by looking at the way things are similar. You can sort by size, shape, color or type. Look at the buttons. What would be a good way to sort them?

Open a small bag of M&M’s or Skittles. Sort all the candies into piles by their color. How many of each color do you have? Fill in the chart.
When you are done, ask your teacher if you can make the candy disappear. 😀
