Many of you may be wondering, what is algebra? Well, algebra is when we start bringing letters into math. That may sound just terrible or overwhelming, but it is actually very fun to learn! It is also the basis of many math concepts you will study in junior high and high school. Let's start by watching this video that gives a brief overview of what algebra is.

In 6th grade, we look at algebra in three parts: expressions, equations, and inequalities. Each one builds upon the other, and by the end of the unit, you are an algebraic expert!

In this unit, you will be able to...

1. Write and evaluate expressions using the order of operations including whole-number exponents.
2. Write, read, and evaluate expression with variables.
3. Identify equivalent expressions and apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
4. Understand solving an equation as a process of answering a question.
5. Use variables to represent numbers and write expressions when solving real-world mathematical problems.
6. Write and solve inequalities to represent a constraint or condition in real-world mathematical problems.
