Before You Begin Exercise 2...

Now that you’ve had a chance to explore the basics of visual hierarchy, let’s take it a step further!

This ungraded activity helps you build your design eye by reflecting on how visual hierarchy influences your reaction to e-learning materials. You'll look at several examples and rate how visually pleasing or frustrating they feel, and learn why they might affect you that way. This is a great opportunity to connect the design principles you've learned with how you naturally respond as a viewer or learner.

Ready? Let’s dive in and see what stands out to you!

Instructions:

  • Review each e-learning example provided below. You'll see a mix of strong and weak visual hierarchy in action.

  • For each example, rate your initial reaction:

    • 😍 Very Pleasing

    • 🙂 Somewhat Pleasing

    • 😐 Neutral / Meh

    • 😖 Not Pleasing

    • 😤 Frustrating or Hard to Follow

  • There are no wrong answers. Every answer you choose is considered correct and will come with a short explanation. The goal is to help you build awareness of how design affects your learning experience, not to “get it right.”

  • After you submit your answers, read the design explanation included below the question. It will explain what works (or doesn’t) in terms of layout, contrast, spacing, color, alignment, and overall flow.

  • Use this as a self-check to reflect on how visual hierarchy affects your own engagement and motivation as a learner.
