Health & Safety in the Sewing Studio

Introduction

We have a duty of care to all staff, volunteers, contractors, clients and trainees. We accept that this is a duty imposed by law on all individuals and organisations to avoid carelessly causing injury to persons.

These Health and Safety practices are designed to provide adequate control of health and safety risks arising from our work and learning activities. We are committed to a safe working environment for all and we will promote good practice in health and safety within the learning environment and will ensure compliance with all relevant statutory provisions.

Practices

1. To help make the learning environment a safe place, be aware of other people and objects or equipment at all times.

2. Don’t run around the building. Look out for and obey all warning notices and safety signs. Where there are defined walkways, use them.

3. Report any hazards you see in the workshop or studio e.g. a broken chair.

4. Do not operate machinery if unwell or on medication but inform the tutor or a member of staff at the start of any workshop activity if you have a medical problem or disability that could create a safety hazard.

5. Use protective equipment provided when handling chemicals and/or for projects as instructed

6· Do not have food or drink near machines or tools
7. Turn off the iron after use and return it to its stand to prevent burn accidents
8. When using hand tools with a cutting edge, make sure both hands are behind the blade when using it.

9. Ensure you are competent to operate machinery and never use any machinery until your tutor has trained you in its safe operation.

10. Keep your work area tidy. Ensure a machine and the area around the machine are clear of waste before and after use.

11. Switch your machine off when not in use.

12. Do not try to fix or repair machines that are damaged or not working properly but call the attention a staff member
