Stop The Bleed Campaign was created following the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. We felt it was important for each classroom to have a stop the bleed kit and have some knowledge of basic life saving measures that can be taken in the event of an emergency situation. We partnered with Riverton Hospital and they were able to help us out with the kits. Each classroom will have a stop the bleed kit that includes a combat tourniquet, gauze pads, a pair of gloves, clotting sponge, ace bandage and a sharpie. We may, at a later date, try to add supplies to each kit. DO NOT use the tourniquet to practice. It can actually stretch the tourniquet and make it less effective. We have practice tourniquets you can use if you'd like to do so.
Most people think of extensive bleeding in a mass casualty situation, but stop the bleed can also come in handy in many other everyday life situations, for example, a car accident, in theater class where they are building their set with tools, in foods class where knives are being used, etc.
Please watch the video below. Please know there are some pictures you may find disturbing. Keep in mind they are staged. None of them are real, unlike the live training that will happen at a later time. We apologize in advance for the length of this video but this is a very quick overview of what to do in an emergency when there is extensive bleeding. The in person training is longer so we felt like this video got the point across. We considered not including this segment as part of the health and safety training, but considering the day we are living in, we feel it's the responsible thing to do.
